Mr. WANNI ARACHCHIGE WICKRAMASENA
Mr. W.A.Wickramasena was born on 22nd April 1939. He had his entire education at Nalanda College,Colombo. He was the first and only student in the first batch to be graduated with a first upper in Music at the State College of Fine Arts in 1958 and subsequently joined the Royal College Staff as a Music Teacher in 1959. In the 1966 this multi-talented educator entered the Teachers Training College, Maharagama and passed out as a Science Trained Teacher and rejoined the College to teach Science as a subject for GCE in 1970. In recognition of his dedicated and devoted service to the College, he was appointed as the Sectional Head of GCE (O.L.) in 1975 and served until his retirement in1990.
He was the Master in charge of Royal College Oriental Music Society since 1959 -1965 and 1979 -1990. In the very first year as a teacher, he trained and enrolled a group of talented young Royalists for the All Ceylon Folk Songs (Janagi) Competition and won the first prize in 1959. Also he was instrumental in creating the Royal College Cadet Band and the Royal College Oriental (Hewisi) Band in 1973. He bears the honour of composing the Sinhala version of the College Song in 1962 and the reviced version in 1976. He also served as the Master in charge of Royal College Photographic Society for a very long term.
The Ceylon Cadet Corps introduced the Herman Loos Challenge Cup to be awarded to the Most Outstanding Platoon of the Year at the Diyathalawa Camp in 1917.
Under the command of 2nd Lt. W. A. Wickramasena, for the first time in the history Royal College, Senior Cadet Platoon won this coverted Herman Loos Challenge Cup in1963 and he was awarded the Best Commander Prize . He served the Royal College Senior Cadet Contingent since 1961 to 1964.
Mr. W.A. Wickramasena lost his life long partner a Music Teacher about 2 years ago. He is blessed with two sons and a daughter. The Elder son 'Nishad' (Senior Prefect and Atheletics Captain in 1981) is domiciled in Italy and yonger son 'Dumindu' (Senior Prefect in 1986) is living in California, USA . The loving daughter 'Gayathri ' lives with her father in Sri Lanka .
